"Yes," Thor said, glad that this person finally seemed to understand. "I wish you to track my brother Loki, so that I may prevent him from causing destruction in this realm."

"Oh, yea! You should meet the girls!" Sure it was probably a bad idea, but since when did Holtzmann ever think twice about bad ideas? Scientific advancement was built on bad ideas!

"Abby! Erin! Patty! Who wants dinner?" she yelled, because going to actually find people was for losers.

There had been reports of ghostly activity all along the highway, nothing particularly dangerous it seemed, but they'd wanted to check it out just to be on the safe side. Holtzmann had volunteered to drive out and see what was what, wanting to stretch her legs and get out of the lab (read: she'd made some new playthings and wanted to be the one who got the chance to test them out if things turned south).

It took longer to get out of here than expected, and she'd spent half the night investigating without really finding anything. She was about to head out and use the last few hours of darkness to search some more, but who could ghostbust on an empty stomach? And there was a diner right there, it was almost fate.

She'd made herself comfortable at the counter and slapped her hand down on the surface.

"Your best burger, please, good sir, and quickly!"

"Would his energy be anything like yours, or different?" she asked, already plotting which of her instruments might be of use, if she could use him as a guinea pig so much the better.

"Okay, now I know I said you couldn't go and claim a whole floor, but even I can say I like what you've done with the place." Not that she knew half of what Holtzmann's inventions or setup was even for, but it was very definitely Holtzmann's space and that was what was important.

"I mean, it kind of looks like Rube Goldberg and Jules Verne had a fight and got their plans mixed up, but it works for you."

That portal in New York had torn the Twilight and Midnight Americas right apart. The ghost roads were still in the process of rebuilding themselves out of the sediment of history that was New York City. It was still difficult for even the benign types like Rose to resist the tide-like push-and-pull that everyone from the Twilight down could still feel.

Rose sure as hell knew she wasn't dropping down this close to the city.

"Uh, hey," she said, approaching the woman at the counter. She didn't get rides from women very often, but sometimes they were more generous with food. And even the ones who might be interested didn't try to bargain with her for backseat quickies. "The guy I was riding with kinda... stole all the cash I had on me. Any chance I could talk you in to doubling that order?"

She did her best to look underfed while not coming off like a junkie. "And maybe a ride out of the city? As far as you're going is fine, you can let me off at a rest stop or... anything." Lipbite. Doe eyes.

Rose doesn't see much TV. So there's absolutely no gleam of recognition in her eyes. Just a teenage girl running away from New York instead of to it for once.

And this woman doesn't carry that ashes-and-lilies or sugary rosemary that would signify an accident. Just the fading ash and ozone that everyone coming out of the city had these days. A little stronger on her, maybe, but it did seem to vary.

He gave a bark of a laugh and reached over to clear aside some of the debris. Once it was clear, he let himself flop on the ground beside Tony.

"Oh, come on. You didn't nearly blow up. The car blew up. You don't have a scratch on you."

"Similar enough for your instruments, I would believe," Thor said. While he had no doubt that the technology in use for the Ghostbusters was among the likes of which the majority of Midgardians would have difficulty with, it would mean that they were antiquated in comparsion with that of Asgard. However, that gave Midgard the advantage: Loki would not think to shield himself from older methods of detection.

Or so Thor was guessing, anyway.

"'Course it works for me, the whole space is a Holtzmann original," She flung her arms out in a little 'ta-da' gesture, obviously proud of her work. It was a mess already, of course, but that was just who she was.

"How about I give you the grand tour?" she couldn't promise the tour wouldn't consist of 90% technobabble, but of course she wouldn't see that as a problem.

"Hey" Holtzmann turned to face the young woman who had approached her, leaning against the counter with distinctly flirtatious bodly language "Sure I can, no problem at all. And I'm not really going...anywhere... so wherever you want to go is fine." she shrugged.

"Make it two," she told the waitress, turning back to Rose and motioning for her to take the seat. "So," she said, a mischievous twinkle in her eye "What's a girl like you doing in a place like this?"

"I was very, very close to blowing up, if you hadn't been here, I would have been a goner. Only if you hadn't been here neither would I so really you endangered my life before saving it. You owe me compensation." he says in a faux-serious tone.

He tilted his head and gave Tony a very skeptical look.

"You wanted to see if it would work as much as I did, once I gave you all the opportunity. And if you'd tested it by yourself, you would have been shit out of luck."

He nudged him with a grin.

"So right back at you."

"Well alrighty then, step right up and we'll see if we can't get a reading or two." if she could calibrate some of the equipment to his energy signature, it would be close enough to serve as a tracker for his brother.

"Are we looking for tracing or entrapment, or both?"

allyofmidgard: (i know what must be done)

[personal profile] allyofmidgard 2016-07-21 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"The plan was tracing, but if you and your comrades wish to join on my mission, I will happily accept the efforts," Thor said, beaming. "My brother is crafty, and often the more there are the better it can be to trap him."

Funny question for someone so often just called The Girl In The Diner.

"Mostly trying to get out of town. Really not much of a city girl. I've been here for hours trying to talk someone into a ride," she says. "I even fixed this one lady's car for her- well, okay, not so much fixed as... kludged a fix to get her as far as she needed to go," she said. She still had some engine grease under her nails, visible thanks to very chipped nail polish. The grease brought the air of authenticity to what would otherwise be a Brooklyn hipster's uniform, right down to a 50's-style (possibly actual vintage) men's mechanic uniform shirt. Gary, said the name tag. "She bought me a slice of pie, but wouldn't even take me to the next rest stop."
That woman had smelled of ashes and rosemary, until the car was fixed. One death on the road averted. Rose had saved her life, and gotten what she was pretty sure was reheated frozen pie in return.

"By the way, skip the pie here. There's a place half an hour north that still makes theirs from scratch."

She understands how liberating it can be to have the chance to be someone else, someone that you can discover. It's fortunate that Inara happens to like younger, awkward, entirely uncertain of themselves men. She does have to work a little harder than Tony at classes (but don't most people) but she manages to have a social life and keep her grades up.

That's what college is for, or so Inara hears. She is reasonably comfortable in her skin, or rather she's comfortable in the skin that she shows everyone else. Her private self is a different story, and that's a self that almost no one knows. It's a side of herself that she's not comfortable showing anyone, even in this place where she's supposed to get a fresh start.

The debonair persona has her smiling even as he approaches. She knows who he is, even if their paths haven't crossed yet.

She ducks her head a bit, pulling her bottom lip through her teeth before she looks up at him, catching his eyes. "Yes. To both my name and the drink, Mr. Stark."

"Oh I see, so really you saved my life because you want a reward?" Tony asked, pretending offense. He sighed dramatically, twisting onto his side and propping himself up on his elbow.

"Alright then, what do you want?"

"Ooh, a mission! How exciting." It was a little hard to tell if she was being genuine or not, but she started dancing around her workbench so it was quite possible she was. She grabbed equipment and tools, putting things together and occasionally waving them thoughtfully in Thor's direction, all the while announcing her intentions in a cheerful stream of techno-babble.

"Well, Gary," Holtzmann leaned in, grinning slightly "I like a girl who knows how to get her hands dirty. Stick with me and we'll go places, kid."

Ok so those 'places' were just a little further along the highway, but Holtzmann was in a good mood, it would be nice to have a bit of company while she ate, and while she drove, plus there was no way the girl wouldn't have questions when she saw the car, and Holtzmann loved explaining the tech.

"It goes without saying, of course, that it will be dangerous." Thor's voice is serious, level against the cheerfulness coming from the helpful Ghostbuster. He's not meaning to be awful, he just does not want to let anyone decide to come along on the mission uninformed. "There is no shame in thinking that it may be better to work from this base."

A pretty girl had responded to him, would wonders never cease, clearly there was something to this person he was constructing, however painfully slowly the transition from awkward dork to smooth socialite was going.

"Call me Tony, please, all my friends do," not that he had that many of them, but fake it 'till you make it "What can I get you?" he was already mentally plotting the quickest route to the kitchen and back to minimise the chance for her to wander away or get distracted before he returned with the drink. Not that that had ever happened to him before or anything. And it definitely hadn't happened more than twice.

"It's Rose," said the girl, just before a waitress set their plates down in front of them. They were real generous with the fries here, and Rose looked at her plate like she hadn't eaten in days. Which, aside from that slice of pie, she hadn't, technically.

There was near-immediate face-stuffing and an afterthought of "can you pass me the ketchup and stuff?" which she hoped didn't seem weird when the condiments were in easy reach. She found that immediately making use of her hands made these things go over easier. If she'd simply grabbed them herself, they would taste of nothing but ashes for her. It was one of those pesky being-dead catches. Anything she took had to be freely given by the living. She was a hitchhiking ghost and not a stowaway or car-hijacking ghost for a reason.

Oh, sweet Persephone, these fries were good.

Not yelled at. More just snapped at. Isabel doesn't yell. It's far too common and gives someone else power. He is pretty quick witted, which is why he's lasted this long, which is why she's so prickly about the fact that she's having feelings for him; feelings that make her soft and vulnerable and give him the power to hurt her. If Scott cares about Stiles, he'll tell him to run away from Isabel as quickly as possible. She knows that and she hates herself sometimes for being such a bitch, but she's like a snail (or something). This hard shell is the only thing that really keeps her together.

It's not a bad tactic and today, it might actually make her dial the bitch back. She knows that Stiles is good to her. She knows that he's a good guy and maybe there's a small part of her that's afraid she's going to ruin him because he's a good guy. She doesn't want that. Sometimes, she feels like she's constantly testing him, pushing to see how far she can push him, how tough is he? How much will he take? How much can he take? Can he cope with all of Isabel's issues single-handedly? Maybe. It's looking more and more likely anyway. "Yes. That's obvious," she sighs, raking both hands through her hair. First Mercy Falls, now Beacon Hills. It seemed she was doomed to deal with wolves (and other things). She lays her head back against the car seat. Her voice is soft, a little far away and terribly wistful when she speaks again. "Do you ever wish you could just run away from it all?"

She's quiet while he drives, thinking about that place where she could run away from it all. She looks over to him when he asks where she wants to go.

"Some place with coffee and something divine to eat. Or at least passable."

She feels her stomach flip flop at the way he perks up when he sees her. This boy....he makes her giddy more often than not. Her lips curve into a brilliant smile and she quickens her pace, reminding her that she probably shouldn't throw herself into his arms. She tries to stifle the smile without much success, biting at her bottom lip as she does.

"I'm really good," she tells him, almost as if she's exhaling a breath once she finally reaches him. "You? And yes. I'm so ready for this." She looks up toward the entrance to Chinatown then back to him. "Can we look around first? Or are you starving? I don't mind dinner if you'd rather do that."

Her words are a little too fast, tripping along with her nerves and her excitement.
